Introduction

History:  The study of the past, exploring the way it has shaped today, the most influential people over time and the affect History has on people today.

Aims and objectives:

To provide pupils with a clear understanding and knowledge of the past and present and how it affects the world today. Pupils will have the opportunity to look at events that affect and shape our world. They will be observing the roots of conflicts and change and analysing these issues as well as possible solutions that can help solve the many crises humanity faces.

Course Structure:

Key Stage 3 History follows the National Curriculum guidelines to ensure that students are well-versed in British History, and prepared to embark on GCSE History by the end of Year 9 if they so choose. The children will also cover Islamic history and topics such as:

  • The Life of the Prophet (pbuh)
  • The Four Rightly-guided Caliphs
  • The Great travellers and leaders of the past
  • The Umayyads and Abbasids
  • Mongols
  • Andalusia
  • Ottomans

In Year 9 the pupils will study Britain 1750-1900 and events of historical significance post WWII. They study a wide range of topics which may include:

  • The British Empire and its influence in the world
  • Industrial Revolution and its impact on Britain
  • Slavery
  • Changes in government
  • Rights of Women
  • The causes of WWI and WWII
  • Post WWII events.

Key Stage 4 History:

The course at Brondesbury follows the Edexcel GCSE in History ‘Modern World History’. The chronology of the specification runs from the late nineteenth century to the modern day and aims to give students a clear understanding of the key issues which have helped to shape the modern world. These are: Three examined units:

  • Unit 1: The aftermath of WW1, the causes of WWII and the origins of the Cold War
  • Unit 2: The USA, a depth study 1919-1941
  • Unit 3: A divided union, Changes in American society and government post WWII

Controlled assessment unit:

  • Unit 4: War and the transformation of British society 1914-1950

Assessment:

The subject is assessed through the GCSE examinations for units 1, 2 and 3 taken throughout years 10 and 11, which constitute 75% of the final grade. The remaining 25% comes from unit 4, the controlled assessment assignment.

KS3
