Introduction

“He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted receives indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.” [2: 269]

Taught by: Mr Ziyauddin Azam BA (Hons) Leeds: PGCE, Al-Azhar

Religious Studies: At Brondesbury College, Religious Studies is one of the most important departments in the school as it is at the centre of promoting the Islamic ethos; the key to success in both this life and the next.  The department is always developing itself in order to give the students the best possible education.

Aims and Objectives: Providing the students with a more modern approach to studying topics related to Islam. The students look at today’s issues – perhaps including things one sees or reads about in the news. They will also look at different philosophies and learn about ethics in areas such as medicine, peace and justice, poverty and wealth.  The students will acquire skills in interpreting and evaluating pieces of information, communicating and applying their knowledge, and in solving problems.

Course Structure: All students will study Comparative Religions which touch upon key beliefs and practices, doctrine and rites at KS3 where a great emphasis is placed in promoting tolerance and awareness of other faiths.

At KS4 students will be entered for early GCSE’s starting from year 9 with Philosophy and Applied Ethics and Religion and life based on the study of Islam.  Increased focus will be placed on issues of life in light of Islamic and non-religious teaching.

Throughout KS3 and KS4 priority is placed on developing cognitive skills and a willingness to learn from others; being prepared to recognise and acknowledge their opinions and engaging in argument but learning to disagree respectfully.
