Learning a foreign language widens students’ perspectives and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education fosters curiosity and deepens pupils' understanding of the world.

"O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another."

The Noble Qur’an [49: 13]

The phrase 'that you may know one another' (لِتَعَارَفُوا) in the verse above, implies the need for communication and understanding, which often includes learning each others languages. In that vein, our teaching aims to develop pupils' ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing, and understand native speakers. It also lays the groundwork for learning other languages and supports future study or work abroad.

The course is designed to enable students to: 

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity; finding ways of communicating what they want to say, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. 
  • Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt 
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

In 2024, 100% of students achieved at least grades 9-7 in French.

KS3

Year 7 Module Overview

Each module integrates grammar objectives, vocabulary development, and cultural insights to enhance language learning.

Module 1 – C’est perso
This module covers personal introductions, likes and dislikes, personality traits, and basic grammar such as the present tense of être and avoir, adjective agreement, and possessive adjectives. 

Module 2 – Mon collège
Focuses on school-related vocabulary, including subjects, opinions, and daily routines.

Module 3 – Mes passetemps
Introduces hobbies and leisure activities, along with relevant verbs and expressions.

Module 4 – Ma zone
Covers topics related to one's local area, including places in town, directions, and activities.

Module 5 – 3…2…1…Partez!
Prepares students to discuss holidays, travel plans, and future intentions


Year 8 Module Overview

Each module integrates grammar objectives, vocabulary development, and cultural insights to enhance language learning.

Module 1 – T’es branché(e)?
Focuses on media and technology, including TV, music, and internet usage.

Module 2 – Paris, je t’adore!
Covers past holidays and introduces the perfect tenses

Module 3 – Mon identité
Explores personal identity, discussing personality traits, relationships, and fashion.

Module 4 – Chez moi, chez toi
Describes homes and local areas, including rooms, furniture, and chores.

Module 5 – Quel talent?!
Encourages students to talk about talents and ambitions, using the near future tense.

KS4

At GCSE level, the course is designed to enable students to:

  • Listen attentively and respond to spoken language.
  • Engage in conversations by asking and answering questions, expressing and responding to opinions.
  • Speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary and basic structures.
  • Develop clear pronunciation and intonation when reading aloud or speaking.
  • Present ideas and information to different audiences.
  • Read and understand words, phrases, and simple texts.
  • Enjoy stories, songs, poems, and rhymes in the language.
  • Expand their vocabulary and use dictionaries to understand new words in context.
  • Write from memory and adapt phrases to express ideas clearly.
  • Describe people, places, and actions in speech and writing.
  • Understand basic grammar, including gender forms, verb conjugation, sentence building, and comparisons with English.

For Grammar and Volcabulary, students will learn to:

  • identify and use tenses or other structures which convey the present, past, and future as appropriate to the language being studied
  • use and manipulate a variety of key grammatical structures and patterns, including voices and moods, as appropriate 
  • develop and use a wide-ranging and deepening vocabulary that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, allowing them to give and justify opinions and take part in discussion about wider issues 
  • use accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation
