Wednesday, 8th July 2026 was a truly memorable day for our students and staff. Thanks to the generous support of the Yusuf Islam Foundation, especially Brother Isa, we had the honour of welcoming Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, one of the UK’s leading Sports and Exercise Medicine specialists, to Brondesbury College for Boys (BCB) and Islamia Girls School (IGS).
Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal has enjoyed an exceptional career spanning more than 21 years in elite sport, including 19 consecutive seasons in the English Premier League. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as:
Having worked alongside some of the world’s most recognisable footballers and managers, Dr. Iqbal shared fascinating insights into the world of elite football. Students were captivated as he described the trust, respect and close relationships he developed with players throughout his career. He explained that while physical expertise is essential, caring for people, earning their trust and supporting them through both success and setbacks are equally important.
The day began with a whole-school assembly at BCB at 9.00 a.m., followed by an inspiring presentation at IGS at 11.00 a.m. During both sessions, students listened attentively as Dr. Iqbal shared the remarkable journey of his life and career.
Speaking with great humility, he explained how his Islamic faith, perseverance, discipline, commitment to education and strong work ethic enabled him to overcome challenges and achieve success at the very highest level of professional sport. His message reminded students that success is never achieved overnight but through consistent effort, good character and placing one’s trust in Allah.
One of the most memorable messages he shared was the importance of family. Dr. Iqbal encouraged our students never to lose sight of their responsibilities towards their parents and loved ones, explaining that no professional achievement can replace the value of caring for one’s family. He reminded students that true success is measured not simply by career achievements but by the positive difference we make in the lives of those around us.
Dr. Iqbal also spoke passionately about giving back to society. He shared moving stories of his voluntary humanitarian work, explaining how, following devastating earthquakes in his country of origin, he left the comfort of his professional life to travel into remote mountain communities to provide medical care to those in desperate need. His experiences powerfully demonstrated that knowledge and professional success should always be used to benefit others, especially those facing hardship.
Students were equally fascinated by his educational journey, his experiences working with professional football clubs and The Football Association (FA), and the many career opportunities available within sports medicine and healthcare. During the question-and-answer sessions, students asked thoughtful and insightful questions, which Dr. Iqbal answered with warmth, honesty and encouragement. His ability to connect with our young people left a lasting impression on everyone present.
Dr. Iqbal’s visit reinforced many important messages that will remain with our students:
Dr. Iqbal’s inspiring journey encouraged our students to dream big while remaining grounded in their values. His story demonstrated that regardless of background, determination, resilience and strong moral character can lead to extraordinary achievements.
Students left both sessions feeling inspired to:
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Yusuf Islam Foundation, especially Brother Isa, for making this exceptional opportunity possible. We also express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal for generously giving his time, sharing his remarkable experiences and inspiring our students with wisdom, humility and compassion.
This unforgettable visit has motivated our young people to pursue excellence, embrace lifelong learning and recognise that true success is measured not only by professional achievement, but also by service to others, devotion to family and living a life of faith, purpose and compassion.
May Allah (SWT) reward everyone who made this special day possible and allow our students to benefit from the invaluable lessons they have learned. Ameen.
